The Healing Power of God
(Luke 5:12-17)

1. The need to experience the healing power of God is often the motivation that leads people to
an encounter with God.

Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. (Luke 4:40-41)

And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live. (Mark 5:23)

A. There are a great many different kinds of healing needed in the world.

1. The physical healing of disease.

Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases. (Psalms 103:3)

2. The healing of the heart, which affects the way you think and feel about life.

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds (Psalms 147:3)

He hath anointed me to preach the gospel to heal the broken hearted. (Luke 4:18)

3. Healing from the work of a demon.

Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. (Matthew 12:22)

And behold there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years and was bent over and could in no wise raise herself up. (Luke 13:11)

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. (Acts 10:38)

4. The healing of a memory.

A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world (John 16:21).

As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. (Psalms 103:12)

And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. (Jeremiah 31:34)

B. God's power to heal is always present when God's people meet. (Luke 5:17)

II. Principles of Divine Healing.

A. All healing comes from God.

Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise. (Jeremiah 17:14)

I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms; but they knew not that I healed them. I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him. (Hosea 11:3)

B. Healing can begin when a person returns to God and changes their ways and attitudes.

Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up. (Hosea 6:1)

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)

C. God uses His word as the means of healing.

He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. (Ps. 107:20)

Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. (Pro. 16:24)

And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. (Matthew 8:7-8)

D. Healing requires the expression of personal faith in God's power to heal. (Psalms 30:2)

O LORD my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me. The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed. (Acts 14:9)

E. It is unlikely that God will heal you without changing you. (Hebrews 12:13)

And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way, but let it rather be healed.

III. The healing power of God is often visited upon those who demonstrate obedience to God.

Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. (Matthew 9:29)
