The Healing of Memories
(Luke 4:18)
I. If memories are not healed the heart will never be healed.
O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh (Matthew 12:34).
If we believe in our heart that Christ was raised from the dead. (Romans 10:9)
For the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who is given unto us. (Romans 5:5)
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. (Proverbs 4:23)
II. What type of memories need to be healed?
A. Painful experiences from childhood and youth.
Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more. (Isaiah 54:4)
We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God (Jeremiah 3:25).
B. The pain of broken bonds or connections with significant relationships.
It is not an enemy who taunts me- I could bear that. It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me-I could have hidden from them. Instead, it is you-my equal, my companion and close friend. What good fellowship we once enjoyed as we walked together to the house of God. (Psalms 55:12-14)
C. Traumatic events.
III. How to heal memories.
A. Grant forgiveness to the offender who dominates your memory. Seek forgiveness for anyone you have offended or hurt.
And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. (Mark 11:25)
B. In prayer ask God to help you relive your memory with these changes:
1. Recognize that God is with you during the painful event and is with you now.
But without faith it is impossible to please Him. For He that cometh to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. (Heb. 11:6)
2. You could not exercise faith when you were being hurt, but you can now. Ask God to fill this memory with His presence and His healing.
He is a very present help in time of trouble. (Psalms 46:1)
Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise. (Jeremiah 17:14)
I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms; but they knew not that I healed them (Hosea 11:3).
I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him. (Hosea 14:4).
3. Yield yourself more fully to God that he can may use you as an instrument of righteousness for His greater good for you and the Kingdom of God.
And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to Godas being alive from the dead and your members as instruments of righteousness to God (Romans 6:13)
