Healing a Wounded Spirit
(Proverbs 18:14)
The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmities, but a wounded spirit who can bare?
A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones (Proverbs 17:2)
Without a doubt the human spirit is the most important dimension of your life. Two reasons should suffice to prove that statement: It is the part of you that is eternal and the source by which you have access to the power of God. Ecc. 3:11 explains:
He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.
And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the spirit and power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. (1 Corinthians 2:4-5)
The human spirit has intimate knowledge of all the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of your personality that may be hidden from your conscious mind. So when God wants to read you He looks into your spirit. (Hebrews 4:12)
The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly. (Proverbs 20:27)
It is the source of inspiration, insight and understanding which comes to us as a spiritual revelation.
But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding. (Job 32:8)
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. (1 Corinthians 2:9-10)
Finally, the human spirit energized by the Holy Spirit can communicate to our mind so we can acquire knowledge from God.
Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. (1 Corinthians 2:12)
II. How do you heal a broken or wounded spirit?
He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls. (Proverbs 25:28)
A. Recognize the need for spiritual healing. (Psalms 31:9-13)
- A lack of motivation in life.
- A deeply wounded self-image.
- Genuine happiness seems to be an impossible dream.
- A desire for isolation.
- Deep emotional grief about life.
- Fear on every side.
- A longing and desire for the relief of death.
My spirit is broken, My days are extinguished, The grave is ready for me. (Job 17:1)
B. Insights and understanding that can move you to the place of healing.
- God is drawn to the one who suffers from a broken spirit with a desire to save.
The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit (Psalms 34:18).
- God has a great desire to revive the heart of one who is broken.
For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones (Isa. 57:15)
- God is at His best when we are at our worst.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart- These, O God, You will not despise. (Psalms 51:17)
III. You need to bring your broken life to God and He can make it whole again. (Luke 4:18)
