How to Heal a Broken Spirit
(Psalms 51:17)
I. What are the causes of a wounded or broken spirit?
A. Personal sin and rebellion. (Psalms 51:1-4)
B. The sins of others especially those who should love us. (Psalms 55:12-14)
C. Words. How long will ye vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?
D. Tragedy.
II. Insights and understanding that can lead to healing of a broken spirit.
A. God is drawn to the sufferings of a broken and wounded spirit.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. (Psalms 34:18)
B. God is poised ready to respond powerfully to one who is broken in spirit and heart.
For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. (Isaiah 57:15)
C. The one who is broken the most has the greatest potential for trust. (Psalms 31:12-15)
D. God can use the most who has been hurt the most.
All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the LORD. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word. (Isaiah 66:2)
E. When we are at our worst God is at His best. (Psalms 40:1-4)
I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD. Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
III. The healing of a broken or wounded spirit will take place when we can bring our broken life to God as an act of worship and sacrifice.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit and a contrite heart- These, O God, you will not despise. (Psalms 51:17)
And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. (Luke 20:17-18)
